Not Embedded Reporters
The combat footage that is shown in the series is, for the most part, shot be US Navy and Army Signal Corps photographers, who were doing their duty of filming while under attack, especially the Navy film crews. How hard it must have been to keep filming when your every instinct is screaming "Get a gun and start shooting!'

not really into war and had to skip ahead as it got going about Emporer Hirohito and "the Japanese people"... but the action sequences are pretty remarkable. (I have to assume they are all real due to "embedded reporters" of the day). There's some queasy scenes of low-flying aircraft coming right near or under the camera and 'sploding after avoiding the ship gunfire, etc.
